Grade Schoolers
Congratulations on successfully launching your child into the middle years of childhood. It’s a rich time of exploration and discovery.
At this stage, children are busy acquiring many new skills that allow them to experience new levels of personal competence. Much of this learning is aided largely by the structure that home and school provide. Rules and routines support children to gradually learn to control their impulses and follow instructions. The major task of parenting in this stage is concerned with helping the child establish healthy habits and reliable routines so they can experience success on many levels, both now and in the future.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Yet simple is seldom easy, particularly in the midst of increasing complexity in our day to day lives and the bigger world. Hectic and crowded schedules coupled with the pervasive presence of screens and digital technologies make it increasingly difficult for parents to provide healthy structure. There are many possibilities and realities vying for our children’s attention and we find ourselves working harder and harder to be a significant influence in their lives. All of this is quickly compounded if a particular learning or behavioural challenge comes to light.
As a parent of a grade schooler working with a parent coach, you can expect to:
- Refresh yourself
- Update your understanding of the highs and lows of middle childhood and age appropriate expectations
- Create and establish routines that work for your family
- Reduce distractions and focus attention on living and parenting well
- Reclaim your place as the most significant influence in your child’s life.
